Rumble in the Jungle

October 30, 1974 – Kinshasa, Zaire

Muhammad Ali had been stripped of his title and boxing license for refusing the Vietnam War draft.

When he was allowed to return, he lost the title bout against Joe Frazier.

George Foreman then destroyed Frazier, knocking him out in two rounds to become The Champ.

Foreman was the fiercest man on the planet.

In 1974 Muhammad Ali was a 10 -1 underdog and considered too old to fight Foreman.

Ali told his trainor, Angelo Dundee, he had a secret plan.

For five rounds Foreman pounded away while Ali covered up and leaned against the ropes.

Howard Cosell wondered if the fight should be stopped.

According to Foreman, after hitting Ali with a body blow, Ali whispered, “Is that all you got, George?” Foreman thought “Yep…that’s about it.”

In the 8th round, Foreman was counted out after stumbling to the canvass in the center of the ring.

Ali called it “the rope-a-dope.”
